mojo bbq (jacksonville, ga)

Hello food world! After a long hiatus, I'm now posting from Jacksonville, FL.

There's a local chain called Mojo BBQ off University Blvd. that my coworkers and I visit on a weekly basis. There's always advanced planning involved when we plan to eat at Mojos because it gets really busy once it hits lunch time.

The one thing I always get at Mojos is their North Carolina pork shoulder. That juicy, smoky, vinegary chopped pork shoulder and the side of BBQ slaw gets me every single time. It's so delicious especially with the buttery Texas toast that comes with every plate. Other meat of note is the 2 giant slices of turkey breast that comes with the 2 meat combo. It's smoky and quite juicy unlike most turkey breasts we all get served during Thanksgiving. I thought the brisket was ok but I didn't enjoy it as much as the other meats I've had.

As for the sides, I've tried their smoked corn, garlic cheese grits, collards, black eyed peas, and green beans. My favorite are the smoked corn and black eyed peas. Smoky sweet corn and a side of savory black eyed peas -- delicious. I will say though that the black eyed peas are mushy so if you have a problem with that kind of texture, you may not enjoy it as much. The collars were also quite good -- they still have a little bite to them unlike most mushy collards --, the green beans were ok and the garlic cheese grits were ok as well. I wish the grits were a little bit cheesier and they would be perfect!

Did you see those giant onion rings? They're freaking massive. Huge. And they taste awesome with the buttermilk ranch dressing that it comes with.

Verdict? My favorite BBQ so far in Jacksonville. A weekly ritual at work and I suggest you make Mojo BBQ your own weekly adventure as well.

Mojo is definitely our favorite! And we've tried a number of places, plus some of the BBQ food trucks.
